Weekly Staff Picks — October 5, 2026
Share
Welcome to this week's Staff Picks. Our team hand-selected 5 pre-owned Japanese collectibles that stood out to us this week for their character, detail and condition. Every item is sourced and inspected in Japan, and each one below links straight to its product page with full photos.
Staff Picks is a weekly ritual for us. After the inspection table clears on Friday, a few of us stay behind and talk through what came through that week — what surprised us, what aged well, what we would quietly take home if the price tag didn't exist. The list below is the result of that conversation, not an algorithm.
How we describe condition
Every pick below is pre-owned and inspected by hand in Japan before it ships. We do not put a letter grade or a third-party grade on it: the condition of each piece is written on its own product page, and the photographs are of that exact item, not a stock image. If something is opened, missing its box, or worn, the listing says so.
We take this approach because letter grades flatten too much nuance. A figure can be "A-" because of a tiny paint rub on an ankle no one will ever see, or "A-" because the face print is slightly off-register — those are not the same thing to a collector. We would rather describe the piece honestly and let you decide whether the specific flaw matters for your shelf.
This week's picks
1. Real Action Heroes-488 Evangelion 2.0 You Can Not Advance Makinami Mari Illustrious Plugsuit Ver.
A team favorite this week. This scale figure is a clean, display-ready Evangelion piece, inspected by hand in Japan and photographed as it actually is.
Medicom's Real Action Heroes line has long been a benchmark for 1/6 scale fabric-suited figures, and the RAH-488 Mari release is a good example of why. The plugsuit tailoring, the subtle gloss of the fabric, and the articulation hidden under the suit all hold up more than a decade after release. For collectors who grew up with the Rebuild of Evangelion films, a well-kept RAH Mari is increasingly hard to find in Japan at a reasonable price, which is part of why this one caught our attention.

2. Ninja Sentai Kakuranger Kakure Shogun Falconzord Super Minipla SMP Ver.
Bandai's Super Minipla (SMP) line has quietly become one of the most interesting corners of the Super Sentai collector world. Originally sold as candy toys in Japan, SMP kits now rival DX releases for engineering and finish — and the Kakure Shogun / Falconzord set is a strong example. For fans of Kakuranger (and anyone who remembers the Falconzord from the US Power Rangers broadcast), this is the kind of piece that rewards display and handling in equal measure.

Why pre-owned, inspected in Japan
A lot of what we list simply does not exist new anymore. Real Action Heroes releases from the Rebuild of Evangelion era, early SMP runs, mid-2000s scale figures from Alter and Max Factory — most of these have been out of production for years. The pre-owned Japanese market is where they live now, and the condition range in that market is enormous.
Our sourcing team walks shops in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya, plus a rotation of regional auctions, specifically to catch pieces that have been looked after. A figure that spent ten years in a glass case in a smoke-free Japanese home is a very different object from one that has been shipped three times across continents. We try to make sure what reaches our listings is the former.
Collector tips for buying pre-owned Japanese figures
If you are newer to the pre-owned Japanese market, a few habits will save you money and disappointment:
- Read the photos, not just the text. Our listings use photos of the actual item. Zoom in on paint apps around the eyes, hair tips, and weapon edges — these are where wear shows first.
- Check what is in the box. For figures with many accessories (RAH, figma, S.H.Figuarts), a complete set holds its value much better than an incomplete one. The listing will note anything missing.
- Box condition matters, but not always equally. For scale figures, box wear usually does not affect long-term value much. For sealed Minipla, SMP, or Chogokin, box integrity is a bigger deal.
- Buy the character you love first. Speculation on resale is a losing game for most collectors. Pieces you actually want to look at every day are the ones you will not regret.

A little historical context
Both of this week's highlighted picks sit in interesting corners of Japanese toy history. Medicom's Real Action Heroes line launched in 1998 and effectively defined the 1/6 fabric-suited collectible format in Japan — predating many of the Western equivalents that collectors are familiar with today. Super Minipla, meanwhile, descends directly from the shokugan (candy toy) tradition that goes back to the Showa era, when small plastic model kits were sold alongside a stick of gum for a few hundred yen. The fact that an SMP kit today can rival a full DX robot is a quiet triumph of that lineage.
Understanding where a piece comes from — the line, the era, the studio — tends to make collecting more rewarding. If you enjoy that side of the hobby, we cover more of it on our news blog, including deeper dives into specific lines and makers.
See you next Friday
That is it for this week's picks. New inspected arrivals go up throughout the week, and the next Staff Picks post lands next Friday. If you spot something on this list you have been chasing, the listings link directly from the names above — and if you want to see the wider selection, start with our collections page.
