How to Care for Plush Collectibles You Order from Japan

Plush is the most delicate thing we ship: fabric fades, pile crushes, tags tear and moisture invites mould. Here is how to keep a Japanese plush looking like the day it left Tokyo — including its tags, which collectors value.

The basics

Factor Aim for Why

Humidity Dry, ventilated Damp stuffing grows mould from the inside out, where you cannot clean it

Cleaning without ruining it

  1. Read the care tag first
    Japanese tags are usually pictograms — if there is any doubt, spot clean only.
  2. Spot clean
    Cool water, a drop of mild detergent, dab with a cloth. Do not scrub the pile.
  3. Dry flat and slowly
    Away from heaters and sunlight; a fan is fine. Bean-filled plush must dry completely or it will smell.
  4. Brush the pile back
    A soft brush restores the nap once it is fully dry.
  5. Store breathable
    Cotton bag or acid-free tissue, upright, uncompressed.
Never do these
  • Machine wash or tumble dry anything with electronics, beans or delicate embroidery.
  • Bleach, stain removers or hot water.
  • Sealing a damp plush in a plastic bag.
  • Removing original tags — value drops immediately.

Caring for Japanese plush — FAQ

Can I machine wash a Japanese plush?

Assume no. Most Pokémon Center and similar plush carry tags, embroidery, bean weights or electronics that a machine will ruin. Spot clean, or hand wash in cool water only when the care tag allows it.

How do I stop a plush fading?

Keep it out of direct sunlight. Dyed fabric fades faster than painted plastic, and a faded plush cannot be restored.

How should I store one long term?

Clean and fully dry, loosely in a breathable cotton bag or acid-free tissue — never sealed airtight, and never compressed under weight, which permanently flattens pile.
