How to Display and Protect Pre-Owned Anime Figures
How to Display and Protect Pre-Owned Anime Figures
Scale figures are painted PVC and ABS: they yellow in sunlight, sag in heat and collect dust in every sculpt line. Here is how to display a pre-owned Japanese figure so it still looks like this in ten years.

The five enemies of a figure on display
| Enemy | What it does | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| UV / direct sunlight | Yellows white and pale parts, fades hair and skin tones — permanently | Never face a window; use UV-filtering glass or keep the shelf on an interior wall |
| Heat | Softens PVC so thin limbs, skirts and hair sag under their own weight | Keep off the top of heat-emitting electronics; support heavy overhangs with the supplied peg or base |
| Dust | Settles into sculpt lines and becomes abrasive when wiped | Enclosed shelving, and brush rather than wipe |
| Humidity | Encourages mould on cloth parts and corrodes die-cast elements | Ventilated room, desiccant inside closed cases |
| Gravity & vibration | Slow lean, then a fall | Use the original base and pegs, and museum gel on smooth shelves in earthquake-prone homes |
Setting up a shelf properly
-
Pick the wall, not the window
Interior wall, away from radiators and out of the afternoon sun. -
Assemble on the base
Always use the supplied base and pegs; unsupported ankles are the single most common long-term failure. -
Leave breathing room
Figures touching each other transfer paint and plasticiser at the contact point. -
Light them cold
LED strips only, mounted so they never rest against the piece. -
Keep the box flat and dry
Store boxes and inserts elsewhere in the room, upright and out of sunlight.
- Alcohol wipes, household sprays or solvents on painted surfaces.
- Storing figures in a sealed bag in a hot loft — the classic sticky-PVC recipe.
- Hanging or posing a figure without its base for months at a time.
- Stacking boxes with weight on the blister tray.

Displaying and protecting anime figures — FAQ
Should I keep the original box?
Yes. For pre-owned Japanese figures the box is a real part of the value, and it is the safest way to store or resell the piece later. Flatten nothing, keep the inner blister and any inserts, and store the box out of sunlight.
Why do older figures get sticky or discoloured?
Softer PVC releases plasticiser over time, especially when warm. Heat accelerates it, and UV yellows white and light parts permanently. Cool, shaded, ventilated storage is the only real prevention.
How do I dust a figure without damaging it?
Use a soft makeup or camera brush, and a blower for tight sculpt detail. Avoid household sprays and alcohol wipes entirely — they attack paint apps and clear coats.
Do you sell display cases or stands?
No, we do not stock display supplies. If you want a specific Japanese case, base or accessory, send a free Sourcing Request and we will look for it in Japan.
