Where to Buy Authentic Gundam Gunpla Figures & Statues from Japan

The safest way to buy authentic Japanese figures and statues is directly from a Japan-based seller who sources items domestically. At HD Toys Store Japan, every Gundam Gunpla item is sourced inside Japan and inspected before it ships, so you receive the genuine article rather than an overseas reproduction. In our experience inspecting these items, domestic Japanese stock almost always shows cleaner sprues, crisper decal sheets, and original Bandai-sealed packaging that overseas grey-market lots simply cannot match. Browse our Figures & Statues collection to see what is currently in stock.

Gunpla — a portmanteau of "Gundam plastic model" — has been produced by Bandai since 1980, when the first 1/144 scale kits accompanied the original Mobile Suit Gundam television series. Over more than four decades, Bandai has released thousands of individual kits spanning grade lines such as High Grade (HG), Master Grade (MG), Perfect Grade (PG), and the premium Real Grade (RG) series introduced in 2010. According to Bandai's production catalog, the Perfect Grade line alone has covered iconic suits from the RX-78-2 (first released in 1998) through to modern entries from Gundam SEED and Gundam 00. That history means the secondary market in Japan is rich with legitimate pre-owned stock — vintage kits that have been stored unused, opened-but-unbuilt sets, and rare limited-edition releases from event-exclusive runs in the early 2000s.

How to Tell Authentic from Counterfeit

Counterfeit figures and snap-together kits have become more common as the Gundam franchise has grown worldwide. We have handled hundreds of pre-owned kits at HD Toys Store Japan, and the differences between a genuine Bandai product and a bootleg are usually visible within seconds if you know what to look for. To buy with confidence, check for these signs of authenticity:

• Original Japanese packaging with correct logos, barcodes, and manufacturer markings — Bandai kits produced from the mid-1990s onward carry a specific catalog number printed on the side of the box
• Clean, crisp runner gates with no excessive flash or mould lines — legitimate Bandai tooling is precise, and fakes typically show rough or misaligned gate stubs
• Accurate paint application and sculpt detail on any pre-painted or finished statue pieces — counterfeits are often blurry, off-color, or slightly undersized
• A seller who can describe the exact condition and provenance of the item, including whether inner trays, instruction manuals, and foil stickers are present
• Reasonable pricing — a price far below the established Japanese secondhand market rate is one of the most reliable counterfeit red flags

Every item we list is hand-checked against these criteria before it goes live. I've seen collectors regret rushed purchases from unverified overseas resellers, particularly with limited-edition MG or PG kits where even the inner tray color and instruction booklet printing quality can confirm or deny authenticity.

Understanding Pre-Owned Condition Grades for Gunpla

Buying pre-owned Gunpla from Japan is a practical way to access kits that are long out of print, but condition terminology matters. In our experience inspecting these items, the most important factors are: whether the runners are uncut (meaning the kit is fully unbuilt), whether all parts are present and accounted for, and whether the box itself is intact — since box art condition significantly affects display and resale value. A kit described as "sealed" or "mint in box" (MIB) commands a premium for good reason. "Open box, unbuilt" is often an excellent value tier — the kit is complete but the plastic wrap has been removed. Partially built or builder-grade items suit hobbyists who plan to strip, repaint, or kitbash, and are priced accordingly. We describe condition clearly on every listing so you know exactly what you are receiving.

Displaying Your Gundam Figures & Statues

Once your piece arrives, display choices can genuinely enhance or diminish it. Snap-built HG and MG kits benefit from UV-filtering display cases, since prolonged direct sunlight causes yellowing on ABS and PS plastic — a well-documented issue with white and light-gray parts produced before Bandai's material updates in the mid-2010s. Action bases and official Bandai display stands keep dynamic poses secure without stressing ball joints. For finished PVC statues and resin figures, keeping them away from heat sources prevents warping at thinner parts like beam sabers and antennae. A simple silica gel packet inside a closed cabinet controls humidity, which is especially relevant if you live in a coastal climate.

International Shipping from Japan (US, UK, AU, CA)

We ship figures and statues worldwide from Japan, with full tracking to the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Western Europe, and much of Asia. Items are packed to protect boxes and accessories, since collectors value condition — fragile corners and surface finishes are wrapped before outer packaging is applied. Typical transit is roughly one to two weeks depending on destination and shipping method, and you can track your order the whole way. Import duties vary by country and order value; buyers in the US generally clear customs smoothly on hobby goods, while UK buyers should be aware of VAT thresholds that apply to packages arriving from outside Great Britain.
