TA-01 Optimus Prime Black Ver. Transformers Animated Event Limited Takara Tomy

The TA-01 Optimus Prime Black Version is a special event-limited release from Takara Tomy's Transformers Animated line, based on the stylized 2007 animated series that reimagined the Autobot leader with a bolder, more cartoon-inspired silhouette. This black repaint takes the standard TA-01 Optimus Prime mold and reworks it in a sleek, stealth-inspired color scheme that stands apart from the signature red-and-blue look fans know from decades of Transformers media. For collectors who focus on variants, exclusives, and the Japanese side of the Transformers hobby, this figure is a notable piece that pairs the energetic Animated design language with a darker, more display-friendly palette.

As indicated in the title, this is the TA-01 numbered release of Optimus Prime in the Black Version, produced by Takara Tomy and distributed as an event-limited item in Japan. The character is Optimus Prime in his Transformers Animated incarnation, meaning the proportions, head sculpt, and transformation engineering reflect that specific continuity rather than Generation 1, Movie, or Masterpiece styling. Because this was offered through a limited event channel rather than general retail, availability outside Japan has always been restricted, and finding one on the secondary market typically means sourcing it directly from Japanese collectors.

Within the broader Transformers Animated toyline, the TA-numbered releases from Takara Tomy are considered the Japanese counterpart to the Hasbro Animated figures, often featuring improved paint applications, slightly different accessories, or exclusive color variants. The Black Version of Optimus Prime fits into a long tradition in the Transformers hobby of event-exclusive repaints — figures released at conventions, campaigns, or retailer tie-in events that quickly become scarce once the event ends. Japanese Transformers exclusives in particular have a strong following because of the care Takara Tomy puts into packaging presentation and the limited distribution windows that make them harder to track down years later. For anyone building a comprehensive Optimus Prime shelf or an Animated-focused display, this is one of the harder variants to secure in good condition.

This item is pre-owned and has been inspected before listing. It ships directly from Japan, where it has been part of a private collection. As a used collectible, the figure and its original packaging may show signs of handling, shelf wear, minor scuffs, storage marks, or age-related aging consistent with its years on the market. We do not represent this piece as mint or factory sealed unless specifically stated, and buyers should expect the honest condition of a previously owned Japanese release rather than new-in-box perfection. Any accessories or paperwork included are shown and described to the best of our ability based on what is present with the item.

On display, the Black Version Optimus Prime makes a strong visual contrast when placed next to the standard red-and-blue TA-01 release, and it also works well alongside other Animated Autobots and Decepticons for collectors building a full shelf from that continuity. The stealth-style color scheme gives the figure a more serious tone that fits comfortably with Nemesis Prime, Scourge, and other dark-palette Primes that have become a sub-collection of their own over the years. Whether displayed in robot mode as a commanding centerpiece or in alternate mode as part of a vehicle lineup, it stands out as a conversation piece for anyone who recognizes the Animated design language.

For fans of Transformers Animated, variant hunters, Optimus Prime completists, or collectors who focus specifically on Takara Tomy event exclusives, the TA-01 Optimus Prime Black Version represents a meaningful addition to the shelf. Sourced from Japan and offered in honest pre-owned condition, it is the kind of release that becomes harder to find each year as more collections are broken up and individual pieces disappear into long-term storage.
